SHOTOKAN KARATE SOUTH AFRICA REGISTRATION BOOK
Every person who joins the Shotokan Karate South Africa organization is issued a "Membership Book."
KYU GRADING SYLLABUS & EXAMINATIONS
- Shotokan Karate South Africa adheres to a specialized grading syllabi for all adult and junior kyu grades.
- Kyu examinations take place on a regional and club basis before a grading panel of authorised senior examiners.
- A certificate is issued to every successful candidate. Each kyu grade is recorded in the Shotokan Karate South Africa membership book and authorised by a senior grading official.
DAN GRADINGS (Black Belt Examinations)
Dan examinations are conducted by a panel of qualified senior instructors, all members of the Shotokan Karate South Africa shihankai.
Examinations take place twice a year, once in Cape Town and once in the Gauteng region. A successful dan candidate receives a prestigious diploma, scripted in both Japanese kanji and English. The document is authorised by the senior Shihankai member.

NATIONAL & REGIONAL "GASHUKU" Special Courses
The official National Gashuku is held annually in Upington in the Northern Cape. The purpose of this event is to study innovative approaches to training and to up-date and standardize techniques and teaching methods.
All dojo heads, instructors and senior Black Belts are expected to attend the Gashuku.
Regional and Club Gashuku and competitions are held regularly in all regions.
GRASKOP GASHUKU
This regional Gashuku in the Lowveld has become a very popular annual event, which attracts many participants.
Diverse sessions combine tough training with fun and promote cardiovascular fitness, strong spirit and camaraderie.
THE CAPE TOWN YEAR END GASHUKU
This event, started by Cape Town instructors in 1987, submits participants to a week of early-morning training modelled on the extreme Japanese university karate approach.
Unique in the karate world, this gashuku is held in a beautiful traditional dojo, near the sea at the foot of Table Mountain.
Following hard physical, technical and mental training the participants breakfast together at a local coffee shop. A celebratory dinner takes place at the close of the gashuku.
NATIONAL ALL STYLE KARATE EVENTS (KSA)
Shotokan Karate South Africa is a member of the National All Style Association (KSA) and participates in championships and trials at national and provincial level. Those selected for representation receive National or Provincial colours.
